Performance

Cinéma Les Cinéastes, 72000 LE MANS

In partnership with Le Mans Ecole Coréenne and Le Royal cinema, Les Cinéastes is offering a first retrospective of Korean cinema, featuring 8 films with original, universal and visionary themes, representative of the societal issues facing South Korea.

This first retrospective of Korean cinema features 8 films with original, universal and visionary themes, representative of today's societal issues. From slapstick to drama, thrillers to more intimate films, there's something for everyone. From the 1960s heritage film The Handmaid's Maid by Kim Ki Young to more recent films, there's something for everyone, from laughter to reflection, thrills to emotion.

This retrospective of Korean cinema, organised with Le Mans École Coréenne and Le Royal, illustrates part of the country's history. Born under Japanese occupation, it was a symbol of resistance before being controlled and censored. With the arrival of democracy in 1987, Korean cinema gained in freedom and ambition, asserting itself on the international scene thanks to major auteurs and a dynamic industry. Korean cinema, once forced into silence, now speaks to the whole world.

Korean culture reflects the deep-seated aspirations of a society in search of its bearings, and in the throes of cultural change. Korean cinema, with its tormented history, inspires and provokes deep reflection on our own relationship with social cohesion, and fuels debate.
