The initiative was launched in 1991 in the Saint-Nicolas district.
43 plaques bearing the footprints of Le Mans 24-hour race drivers were installed on the pavements of the Avenue du Général Leclerc in Le Mans. This was part of the centenary celebrations on Saturday 3 June 2023.
The town's mayor, Stéphane Le Foll, intends to make this long avenue, which links the railway station to the town centre, more attractive. "The idea is to give it a place and a role. I think it's important to work on the station exit, because it's a gateway to the city, and a gateway to the city has to project an image. So having these footprints, as we go along, will be an important point."
All the signs and plaques have a QR Code that takes you to a digital page: by flashing them, you can find anecdotes, videos and archive images, as well as a quiz for endurance afficionados.
The route is available from the Tourist Office.
