Dating from the late 16th century, Haut Eclair castle is thought to have been built on the site of an earlier medieval building.
During the Revolution, Haut Eclair was the scene of Chouannerie actions led by the Sallet daughters, who were considered to be the "heroines and Amazons of the old Chouannerie".
At the end of the 19th century, the château was sold to Georges Delante, the commune's mayor, who offered the town council the chance to buy it back at a favourable price in order to set up a state girls' school there, which would later be converted into a nursery school.
In 2004, following the transfer of the school, the Communauté de Communes took over responsibility for managing the site. Work was then undertaken to refurbish the site. The first phase of the work was completed in 2009, enabling the château to once again welcome large numbers of visitors and to rediscover the splendour of the festivities of yesteryear during sumptuous receptions.
The latest phase of work recently saw the restoration of the dovecote. Circular in shape, it has 2 levels. It bears the inscription 1611 on the door. The first level was used as a guard room. Pierced with loopholes, it was a place of surveillance and refuge. Upstairs, you can see 800 bolts,
Our guide will tell you all about the mysterious and sometimes tumultuous history of this castle. Alongside her, in small groups, you can discover the dovecote, which is usually closed to visitors. (A spiral staircase leads up to the dovecote, which is not accessible to wheelchair users).
