Who was Saint Julien and what did he mean to the people of Maine in the Middle Ages?

The legendary figure of Saint Julien became increasingly well-known during the Middle Ages, eventually becoming the patron saint of the diocese and considered to be the founder of Christianity in the Sarthe.

Recent research shows, however, that his cult corresponds to the affirmation of an institution, that of the cathedral, taken in hand first by the bishops and then by the chapter. Representations of Julien show the rise and spread of a cult that was above all local and strongly linked to the cathedral institution.
