Conférence : “La mise en place d’une seigneurie châtelaine à Laval au XIe siècle”

For a long time, the appearance of a castellan seigneury in Laval was analysed as the result of the sudden arrival of a "new man", Guy... de Laval, who appeared out of nowhere. In fact, recent studies show that he belonged to the Carolingian aristocracy of Maine, so that the appearance of a castle in Laval can be seen as part of a continuity rather than a sudden break.

So where did this character and his family come from, and what kind of relationships were established around them? To answer these questions, we need to look at the relationships of power both horizontally, within this aristocratic milieu, and vertically, within the wider society living in Laval at the time.
