When we talk about climate, we first need to remember that our planet is criss-crossed by a number of very different climate zones, all of which shape our landscapes, our agriculture and a whole host of other things - in fact, almost everything!
France, at the crossroads of several influences, already offers a summary of this diversity.
But the climate is not set in stone: it has undergone profound changes over the course of the Earth's history, with periods of ice ages and warmer phases. Understanding these past changes helps us to better understand current and future transformations.
The presentation will conclude with a brief overview of the IPCC (the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and its work. This will enable us to look ahead to the various possible climatic futures for our country, based on several foreseeable greenhouse gas emission scenarios.
So what we're going to explore are the basics, the findings and the outlook: to understand where we are now, and where France's climate could be heading tomorrow - so that everyone can form their own ideas, taking into account both the certainties that have been established and the uncertainties that remain.
Philippe Gombert is a recently retired geological engineer.
He now lectures at the Université Inter-Âges in Alençon and the Université du Temps Libre in Le Mans.
