The Musée de Tessé, in Le Mans, occupies the site of the former estate of the de Tessé family, whose collections form part of the ancient collection. The permanent exhibitions, spread over two levels, feature paintings, sculptures and objets d'art from the twelfth to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Highlights include "Le sommeil d'Elie" and "La vanité" by Philippe de Champaigne, "La nature morte aux armures" by Willem Van Aelst, the secretary to Louis XV, and the highly original paintings illustrating Scarron's "Roman comique".
In 2001, a vast underground space devoted to Pharaonic Egypt was inaugurated. It features life-size reconstructions of the tombs of Queen Nofretari, wife of Ramses II, and of Sennefer, mayor of Thebes.
The Egyptian gallery was renovated in 2018.
