This exhibition brings together an exceptional collection of images that illustrate just how long-lived and deeply-rooted festive traditions were. Austere times are not always what they seem.

The Middle Ages were not as much a period of servitude and darkness as is so often portrayed, and certainly much less so than the 19th century. People knew how to celebrate and there were many public holidays: up to one day in three. And not just for religious reasons, far from it. May trees, village festivals and the festival of fools and donkeys. Even certain ceremonies, including those held in churches, could give rise to scabrous "esbattements" by the congregation.
> Exhibition organised by the Tour Jean Sans Peur.
> Accessible with a Manoir de La Cour ticket at no extra charge.

For the duration of the summer, the Manoir team will be recreating a banqueting table in the lord's great ceremonial hall. Tailloirs, trenchers and aquamaniles will compete with each other to show you the essential elements of the seigneurial table. Indeed, as well as being moments of conviviality, the seigneurial banquets served above all to impress and assert their power. A journey through the sometimes excessive art of medieval cooking and staging.
> Accessible with a Manoir de La Cour ticket at no extra charge.
