In 1874, the General Council of the Sarthe carried out a study of a network of local railway lines.
The Le Mans-St-Denis line was built under the direction of engineer Harel-de Lanoë and inaugurated on 17 July 1888. The current building, restored in 2003, has been hosting an exhibition on the history of this 1st metre-gauge network since 2008.
