Most of the Château de Coulans dates from the mid-18th century, with a few later additions towards the end of the 19th century. Coulans has been mentioned since the early 13th century: its position, on a hill facing west, made it a stronghold held by the Lords of Coulans, a barony dependent on the County of Sillé le Guillaume. In the 17th century, the barony of Coulans became the property of the Champagne family and then, from 1687, of the Pasquiers, who have held it directly or indirectly down through their descendants to the present day.
