The Sainte-Croix cemetery is one of six in Le Mans. Small in size, it contains many graves of great aesthetic interest, some bearing the names of famous people. There are some very fine tombs and chapels, but also "one of the most beautiful faces of French statuary", according to the specialist Bertrand Beyern, a necrosopher in Paris, signed Verlet. It is a mourning figure who watches over Léon Bollée.
This allegory of Mechanics recalls the work carried out by the Bollée family in the field of the automobile. Léon Bollée, inventor and manufacturer, was born in Le Mans in 1870 and died in Neuilly 43 years later, at the height of his fame.
