In the moat of the Château de Sourches in Saint-Symphorien, Bénédicte de Foucaud looks after some 1,500 carefully catalogued peonies from all over the world. It's a visit between history and passion, a journey between stone and flower.
The peony conservatory, which opened in 2015, houses 1,500 peonies, including more than 1,400 listed varieties. A conservatory that is unique in the world. This little marvel is the fruit of Bénédicte de Foucaud's passion for this flower, which originated in China.
The initiator of this conservatory is teeming with projects and wants to go even further. "It seems that around 5,000 cultivars of herbaceous peonies and around 600 new varieties of shrubs have been registered worldwide. That's our goal".
The aim of the Peony Conservatory is to conserve and research old and modern species and varieties.
