The interest shown by the museums of Le Mans in Egypt began with the donation in 1822 of objects brought back by Édouard de Montulé from a trip along the Nile, followed by the purchase of several objects by the town in 1913. Since then, this interest has taken on a new impetus in the 1980s, with the organisation of temporary exhibitions and an active acquisition policy, bringing the Tessé museum's Egyptian collection to 250 works.
In 2001, a new stage was reached with the creation of a basement space featuring a life-size reconstruction of two Egyptian tombs: that of Queen Nefertari, and that of the governor of Thebes, Sennefer.
Renovated in 2017, the presentation of the collections has been redesigned around Egyptian art and funerary rituals, and the Louvre's Department of Egyptian Antiquities has granted the Musée de Tessé a new deposit of around thirty works.
