"The Manoir de Verdigné was rebuilt between 1560 and 1580 to designs by Philibert de l'Orme, architect to François I and Henri II. Listed as a historic monument in December 1997, it was made up of four corner pavilions, all linked by the main building and galleries.
The pavilions and inner courtyard were fortified and fitted with loopholes to serve as a stronghold. The builder, Thibault Bouju, was very active during the Wars of Religion and needed to protect himself. This is why 430 metres of moat surround the manor house, to which a drawbridge was added.
Château de Verdigné had fallen into such a state of neglect that the Napoleonic cadastre revealed, at the beginning of the 19th century, major losses, particularly to the gallery, the north-west pavilion and the entrance gatehouse.
