The Quinconces were laid out from 1792 onwards by the engineer Bruyère, on the grounds of the former Jacobins and Cordeliers convents. The English garden, known as Square des Jacobins, features a grotto, a waterfall and a false river. It stretches out in the shade of some remarkable trees such as the hackberry and the gleditschia.
The promenade, consisting of a central esplanade, is surrounded by straight alleys planted with lime trees, and is now completed by the Centre culturel des Quinconces.
