Blending tradition, experimentation and sheer absurdity, the Idumea Quartet deconstruct and reconstruct Appalachian folk music, drawing on strong influences from minimalism and experimental music.
Using traditional string quartet instruments and a shared musical background, the quartet brings folk traditions into dialogue with a chamber music aesthetic. Add harmonised vocals and the result is a sound that is at once high-pitched, solitary and symphonic.
Nathan Bontrager on cello, Becka Wolfe on viola, Jane Rothfield and Ewan Macdonald on violin met at an impromptu gig in a Kent pub in 2016. A few months later, they began work on their debut album More Than One.
