Conference
72000 LE MANS
from 21h30 to 23h00
Galaxies are among the largest structures in the Universe. Today, thanks to technological advances in telescopes, they can be observed with unprecedented precision, and detected right up to the limits of the observable Universe, shortly after the Big Bang. Studying them enables us to retrace the history of the cosmos over billions of years.
To mark the publication of his memoirs, En quête de galaxies, Roland Bacon will be sharing the results of his research into galaxies, as well as the story of the development of a new technique for analysing starlight. He will explain how this breakthrough revolutionised our understanding of the cosmos and paved the way for major new discoveries.
"It's been a wonderful adventure, bringing me into contact with a large number of brilliant minds: researchers, engineers and industrialists of all nationalities, all committed to the same noble goal: the quest for knowledge. I've been lucky enough to build instruments and conduct observations for some of the biggest telescopes on the planet, all located in extraordinary places, such as the high volcanoes of Hawaii and the Canary Islands, or the Atacama desert in Chile. What I retain above all from these years of rich experience is the collective adventure of knowledge. That's what I'd like to share with you through this testimonial.
For those who wish, the conference will close with a book-signing session.
