Bishop of Le Mans from 1918 to 1959, and elected to the Académie française in 1936, Georges Grente wrote an almost daily "diary" from 1921 onwards, which he authorised to be published fifty years after his death. Through this diary, published by Frédéric Le Moigne, we discover a Grente who was different from his official duties, and who commented freely on the bishopric of Sarthe, his fellow bishops and academics, and the 'greats' of the world with whom he had rubbed shoulders...
