The abolition of privileges / Le Royal Velours

Theatre / 1h15 / from 14 years

Adapting Bertrand Guillot's novel, author and director Hugues Duchêne explores a fascinating episode in French history. A plunge into the heart of the Estates General of 1789!
On the night of 4 August 1789, as the regime teetered on the brink of collapse and the people howled their anger, tension was at its height in the National Assembly. In Versailles, the deputies unanimously adopted a universal tax and, with it, the abolition of privileges. With the drum beating, a single actor energetically portrays a dozen or so protagonists, including the deputies Duquesnoy, Le Chapelier, Noailles and the young Talleyrand. The audience, spread around the stage, become members of the Third Estate, the nobility and the clergy for the duration of the performance, witnessing heated debates in which doubts, fears and hopes are confronted. A masterly lesson in theatre and history!
