New York in 1830. Lorenzo Da Ponte runs a bookshop specialising in Italian literature. At the age of 80 and still going strong, he is stunned to discover that a local newspaper has announced his death. Without waiting for the official denial, he set about writing his memoirs.
It would be a chance for him to tell his life story in his own way if a strange visitor didn't upset his plans by reviving a painful memory.
