His books, which have been translated into 48 languages, achieve staggering print-runs, and his plays are regularly performed in over 50 countries: Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt is one of the most widely read and represented French-language authors in the world. He is also the author most studied in secondary schools.
Born in Lyon in 1960, Schmmanuel Schmitt holds an agrégation in philosophy and a doctorate in philosophy. He graduated from the Rue d'Ulm and wrote a thesis on Diderot. He never stopped. Not only have the greatest actors performed or are performing his plays - Alain Delon, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Danièle Darrieux, Francis Huster, Jacques Weber, Charlotte Rampling and many others - but in 2001 he was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie française for his body of work in theatre.
Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt is a luminous novelist, an outstanding storyteller and a lover of music, who brings a gentle, poetic touch to all the arts. His autobiographical narratives leave an important place for his spiritual quest. He is also a scriptwriter and director, and has written French translations of operas, smiles at comics and takes to the stage himself to perform his texts or accompany a pianist or soprano...
In 2012, the Académie royale de la langue et littérature françaises de Belgique offered him chair no. 33, previously occupied by Colette and Cocteau. In 2016, he was unanimously elected by his peers as a member of the Goncourt jury. His literary career is marked by the continuation of his novel La Traversée des Temps, the fifth part of which, Les Deux Royaumes, will be presented.
