Villaines-la-Carelle, in the north of the Sarthe department, is home to the Tessé hillside and plateau, a rare and threatened natural site.
Above the Rutin Valley, the Nature Reserve is made up of a remarkable group of limestone grasslands, a veritable biological reservoir that is home to numerous species, some of which are rare.
The "Coteau et Plateau de Tessé" Regional Nature Reserve is managed by the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels des Pays de la Loire, which maintains, protects and studies the site.
