This Sensitive Natural Area is a former chestnut orchard known as nouzillards. Used for chestnut production, it is located in the commune of Lavernat on the edge of the A28 motorway.

During the construction of the motorway, a species of beetle protected at European level, the Pique-prune (Osmoderma eremita), was discovered within the territories crossed. This species, which has the same level of protection as the Pyrenean bear, is a bio-indicator of a bocage made up of old trees. This type of environment is endangered at European level. The Conseil Départemental, through its policy of preserving the bocage in this area - in particular the pollarded trees and fruiting chestnut groves - is helping to maintain and develop this species. It owns around 3 hectares of the site, including 85 old nouzillards.
