A fragrant garden at the foot of the Le Mans wall.

In the early 1970s, the area of small houses squeezed between the Roman wall and the River Sarthe was demolished. All that remains of the old Gourdaine quarter are two fountains and a postern.

Since then, the town of Le Mans has created a magnificent garden at the foot of the monument, inspired by the medieval urban grid. A grid of islands filled with beds of perennials and grasses is a reminder of the past density of the Gourdaine district. This delightful garden has won a national heritage award.
